AI Sh*t

I’m disgusted at how much of social media is AI-generated sh*t. I have two thoughts about that, a short thought and a long thought.

Here’s the short thought:

AI won’t take over the world, but stupidity might.

Here’s the long thought:

AI is like…

Electricity. It powers our lights and homes, and can start fires and leave communities in the dark.

A printing press. It democratizes communication, and can spread propaganda.

A telescope. It reveals what is otherwise unseeable, but only sees what we point it at.

A scalpel. It can perform precise operations in skilled hands, or harm and maim without training.

Fire. It cooks our food and warms our homes, and destroys indiscriminately when uncontrolled.

A mirror. It reflects humanity, the beauty and the flaws.

A searchlight. It illuminates darkness, or blinds when shined in your eyes.

A musical instrument. It creates harmony and joy, or spine-jarring dissonance.

A chainsaw. It simplifies forest maintenance, and can injure or kill when used carelessly or maliciously.

For all of recorded history, humanity has readily accepted technology’s dangerous gifts. It’s not that we’re reckless; it’s that we are a species that values novelty and advancement. Regarding new technology, we generally choose vigilance over abandonment. Humanity is never perfect, but we’re educable and adaptable while progress never takes a break.

AI is a disruptive technology full of benefits and danger, and it’s here to stay just like metalworking, electricity, factory automation, cars, airplanes, and computers. Get used to living with it. As with any technology, let’s find ways to direct it toward the collective good. And let’s develop better ways to control those who abuse it.

My wife suggested an easy way to say “no” to AI sh*t in social media. When you see abuse of AI, just block that account. Reduce its reach. Teach the algorithm that we don’t want it.
