The Evolution of Email Headers

Early email messages contained a few simple header fields that recorded the sender, the recipient, and the path the message took through one or more intermediate email servers. Occasional spam was not yet a big deal. Here are all the email headers from a spam message I received in 2004:

A year later, email providers upped their game and tried to detect spam. The headers in this 2005 email message contains additional information that the servers inserted to show that the message had been analyzed and [incorrectly] determined to be legitimate, and the spam was delivered unscathed. The battle between spammers and email providers had begun.

  1. Hi Dave,

I got to know you from the masterpiece that is bio simulator video. Then I begin to appreciate your blog works such as one on self learning. I noticed that you are self employed for a decade now.

How did you transition from normal corporate job to self employment? I have been working in corporate as a self taught Software Engineer for 6 years now, and while I like the job I am looking for becoming self employed myself.

Would you be so kind to share your experience or even write a blog post on it?

    1. Thanks for the comment. My wife and I made the escape from corporate employment at about the same time, unguided by reason or strategy. We accidentally discovered that part-time and short-term contract work through a contracting agency is great for networking. After a few years of contract jobs, we had contacts spread far and wide. Those contacts, combined with the grace and intelligence of my better half, generated an ongoing stream of opportunities for gig work. I believe self-employment is about networking and a passion for learning. You clearly have the passion. All the best wishes in your journey.
