{"id":482,"date":"2023-01-26T23:14:07","date_gmt":"2023-01-26T23:14:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/millermattson.com\/dave\/?p=482"},"modified":"2023-01-26T23:15:51","modified_gmt":"2023-01-26T23:15:51","slug":"linux-and-thinkpad-x13-gen-3-amd-a-perfect-match","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/millermattson.com\/dave\/?p=482","title":{"rendered":"Linux and ThinkPad X13 Gen 3 AMD\u2014A Perfect Match"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The short story is that Linux Mint 21.1 (based on Ubuntu 22.04) runs remarkably well on a Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Gen 3 AMD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Thermals and Kernels<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Reportedly, AMD added power management for the Ryzen &#8220;Rembrandt&#8221; mobile processors in the ACPI Platform Profile for recent Linux kernels. I couldn&#8217;t determine for sure what &#8220;recent&#8221; means, so I installed the package linux-oem-22.04c which installed the most recent 6.1 kernel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ACPI Platform Profile also requires the package &#8220;power-profiles-daemon.&#8221; Other than that, I did not install TLP, thermald, or any other power manager.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At idle and with the screen brightness turned down a bit, the laptop consumes about 2.5 watts. The powertop utility estimates a battery run time of nearly 16 hours:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"558\" height=\"72\" src=\"https:\/\/millermattson.com\/dave\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/2.5W.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-486\" srcset=\"https:\/\/millermattson.com\/dave\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/2.5W.png 558w, https:\/\/millermattson.com\/dave\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/2.5W-300x39.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 558px) 100vw, 558px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After installing the jackd audio daemon, conky, and a few other things that operate in the background, the idle power consumption rose to about 3.8 watts, with an estimated battery time of 10.5 hours:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/millermattson.com\/dave\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/3.8W.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"552\" height=\"80\" src=\"https:\/\/millermattson.com\/dave\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/3.8W.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-484\" srcset=\"https:\/\/millermattson.com\/dave\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/3.8W.png 552w, https:\/\/millermattson.com\/dave\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/3.8W-300x43.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 552px) 100vw, 552px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While watching a full-screen 1080p YouTube video in a Firefox browser over WiFi, the power consumption averaged 7 watts with a battery time of 5.5 hours:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/millermattson.com\/dave\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/full-screen-youtube-firefox-ThinkPadX13Gen3AMD.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"545\" height=\"70\" src=\"https:\/\/millermattson.com\/dave\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/full-screen-youtube-firefox-ThinkPadX13Gen3AMD.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-485\" srcset=\"https:\/\/millermattson.com\/dave\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/full-screen-youtube-firefox-ThinkPadX13Gen3AMD.png 545w, https:\/\/millermattson.com\/dave\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/full-screen-youtube-firefox-ThinkPadX13Gen3AMD-300x39.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 545px) 100vw, 545px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Works and What Doesn&#8217;t<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Except for the fingerprint reader, every other component of the laptop seems to work fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The special function keys at the top of the keyboard work, including screen brightness. The keyboard backlight works with Fn+SPACE. Trackpad and Trackpoint work. Sound works, both speakers and headphone jack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Suspend and resume work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Audio<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I enjoy producing music on the laptop, so I installed Ubuntu Studio Controls, which manages the jackd daemon and pulseaudio bridges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ardour, Carla, and the excellent Surge XT synth all work fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Virtualbox<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Virtualbox did not install at first because it has an undeclared dependency on gcc-12.
